Best Image and Video in Plasma Physics Competition

EPL Prize for Best Research Image/Video and Communication Skills in Plasma Physics

Europhysics Letters (EPL) emphasizes the value of communication skills in scientific activities, still largely overlooked in present-day research training. This year EPL sponsors the “EPL Prize for Best Research Image/Video and Communication Skills” which aims to promote high-quality visualization works in plasma physics, explained in a broadly understandable manner.

Attendees of the EPS2019 conference are invited to communicate in a visual, eye-catching way their latest research in the field of plasma physics.

In each of the two categories, Best Image with Description and Best Video with Description, two laureates will be awarded a diploma and a prize (150€ for the winner, 100€ for the runner-up). Also, they will be given the opportunity to publish a free-of-charge open-access paper in EPL during the period 2019-2020, provided acceptance by the referees.

Submission

  • Open to all attendees of the EPS2019 conference.
  • Submissions started on May 15th, 2019 and is now closed.
  • Each participant is allowed to submit a maximum of one image and one video.
  • Group submissions are not permitted.
  • Entries must be associated with research topics covered by the EPS2019 conference and understandable to the broad plasma physics community.
  • Each entry must be accompanied by a one-page, PDF document including an illustration of the submitted image/video and a summary of the underpinning physics. This document must be prepared using the template.
  • Image format: high resolution JPG or PNG.
  • Video format: MP4 or AVI, file size below 500 MB.

Selection process

  • All submissions will be reviewed by an international committee, with members of the Conference Program Committee and EPL editorial board, as well as previous laureates of the contest.
  • A shortlist of a minimum of 10 images and 5 videos will be selected by the committee. The actual number of finalists will depend on the overall quality of the contributions.
  • The shortlisted contributions will be displayed on the EPS2019 webpage and at a dedicated location during the conference.
  • Each conference participant will be eligible for voting (ballots will be given at the reception). Voting will take place during the conference until Friday noon.
  • The four winners will be designated by the committee based on its judging criteria and public voting. The winners will be announced on Friday 12th afternoon.
